Monstrous Love: The Why's of Monster Romance

As an author of monster and non-human romances, I often get a question similar to this when I tell people what I write: Why? Why are romance readers, especially women, drawn to stories that feature monsters as love interests? I get it. This trend might seem unusual, even freaky, at first glance. And don't get me wrong, as a reader and consumer of these stories, freakiness is defintely part of it. Let's just say that monstrous anatomy leads to some very creative intimacy between characters, depending on what is in play. But I think it also reveals a deeper shift in what readers seek from romantic fiction and in society's perception of what is desirable. Monster romances offer a unique blend of fantasy, surprising emotional depth, and exploration of overcoming or accepting physical and cultural differences in different ways than traditional romance subgenres.

I want to explore why this sugenre has gained popularity and what makes it so compelling.

I write a series with orc love interests called The War Brides of Adrik that explores themes such as what truly makes a monster and shared healing through understanding.

Exploring the Appeal of the Unconventional

Monster romances break away from the typical romance novel hero. Instead of a flawless human partner, readers encounter characters who are physically or emotionally different—sometimes frightening, sometimes misunderstood. Repellant, yet strangely magnetic. This shift allows readers to explore themes of acceptance and unconditional love in a fresh way.

  • Embracing the Other

These stories often focus on love interests who are outsiders or misunderstood beings. Readers connect with the idea of loving someone despite or because of their flaws and differences, which can mirror real-life experiences and desires of acceptance.

  • Exploring Attraction Beyond the Superficial

While there are certainly monster romance readers who are genuinely attracted to monsters and will, rightly, proudly tell you so, another theme commonly explored in these stories is the attraction of two souls to each other, regardless of appearance. A handsome face can hide a cruel heart, after all, and monstrous features can disguise an honorable protector. Many readers enjoy finding attraction beyond looks and the journey of a character slowly becoming sexually attracted to a monster who may look unconventional, to say the least.

  • Escaping Reality

Reality is boring and more often than not disappointing. Romance novels traditionally are an escape from this, with fantasies of rugged cowboys or mysterious billionaires whisking readers away from their troubles. Monster romance just ramps this fantasy up to the Nth degree. Love interests can be dragons, shapeshifters, or supernatural creatures, offering a an additional separation from reality that adds excitement, and maybe even a little dash of fear, to the romance.

  • Complex Characters

Monster heroes and heroines are rarely one-dimensional. Monster romances give the opportunity to the previously mindless creatures of myth who were typically the villains of the story, to rise up as complex characters with a deep capacity for love and desire. Their struggles with identity, self-perception, control, or societal rejection can create rich, layered characters that deepen the emotional impact of the story in a way that human love interests in stories often lack.

Emotional Depth and Conflict

The best stories thrive on conflict and emotional tension. Romance novels need these more than most. Monster romances heighten these elements by introducing barriers that go beyond typical relationship issues. There are often very strong reasons why the characters, especially when one is human and the other isn't, shouldn't be together. Their desire to be together in spite of these barriers creates delicious conflict and the opportunity for possible angst and character growth.

  • Physical and Emotional Barriers

The monster’s nature often creates obstacles—fear, size difference, physical incompatibility, prejudice, or danger—that the couple must overcome. This struggle adds intensity and stakes to the romance.

  • Themes of Redemption and Healing

Many monster romances explore healing from trauma or past mistakes. The monster character may seek redemption, while the human partner offers understanding and compassion. Or the human character, wounded by dealings with other humans, seeks acceptance and healing from a monstrous protector. The dichotomy of their differences opens the possibility of many types of healing by completing each other in unexpected ways.

  • Power Dynamics

The difference in strength or abilities between partners can create interesting power dynamics. In good monster romances, these dynamics are explored with nuance, often challenging traditional gender or societal roles and expectations. It's also a powerful fantasy to have a monster with incredible strength and predatory instincts to instead to choose to love, cherish, and protect one who should have been prey.

Let's Talk About The Spice

It would be disingenuous to leave out talk about sex and intimacy when discussing the appeal of monster romances. While there are certainly monster romances without explicit scenes, it would be silly to pretend that the majority are not written for an open-door audience. For those who do not read monster romances this can be the main cause of their confusion. What? They ask. Someone actually wants to have sex with a monster? Monsters are, by definition, grotesque! Inhuman! Where's the appeal?

I would argue that is the appeal. Humans are our reality and, as I stated above, reality is often disappointing. The reality is that research indicates about 10–15% of women are unable to reach orgasm ever, while up to 50% experience difficulty or only infrequently reach orgasm with a partner. The fantasy of a non-human partner opens the possibilities of sex that is designed for the female gaze/comfort and is centered on the female orgasm, something that our patriarchal society often lacks.

Some examples of this include:

  • “Ice Planet Barbarains” by Ruby Dixon

A massively successful non-human romance series featuring women who have crash-landed on another planet and embark on relationships with the alien inhabitants. The alien males are all well-endowed and have an appendage above their penises called a "spur" that proveds easy and direct clitoral stimulation during sex, increasing pleasure and the chance to orgasm.

  • “Tempting Monsters” by Kathryn Moon

This "why choose" series features a plethora of different creatures in relationships with women in the Victorian era, all with different abilities that increase pleasure during sex. Basilisks with sensitizing venom, demons with prehensile tails that can be used to stimulate, creatures with knots that press on the G spot, etc. Maybe not the best series for those inexperienced with monster romance, but one that fully explores its pleasurable possibilities.

  • “Orc Sworn” by Finley Fenn

This immensely popular series features an all-male orc society (necessitating human women for having young) that is very sexually liberated and focused on pleasure with their partners and exploring kinks. It also features a common monster romance trope of making the monster's ejaculate pleasant to the taste, even desireable, another way of showing how the sex is focused on the (mostly) female partners' positive experience.

  • “The War Brides of Adrik” by Jordyn Alexander

I'll indulge in a bit shameless self-promotion (this my blog, after all, lol). This series also features orcs (both male and female in this world), but they have an auditory ability known as sibilance that causes increased arousal and attraction in their partners, as well as causing various appendages to vibrate during sex. The orcs in series also are highly attuned to scents and are attracted to pheremones, making them highly enthusiatic at oral sex.

These examples illustrate how the fantasy of sex wihout human physical limitations in monster romances holds quite the allure. Monster romance intimacy prioritizes mutual copious pleasure and easy, plentiful orgasms, something is is unattainable or at least difficult for a good portion of woman and people with female sex organs in real life.

Why Readers Keep Coming Back

The growing popularity of monster romances is not a passing fad. More monster romances are published all the time and the demand is growing, not diminishing. Readers return to these stories because they offer something different, meaningful, and, yes, arousing.

  • Representation of Diversity

Monster romances celebrate diversity in appearance, personality, and experience. They challenge the idea of what a romantic hero or heroine should look like and what desire and attraction can be.

  • Exploration of Identity

These stories often delve into questions of identity and belonging, resonating with readers who feel different or marginalized. The theme of unconditional love and acceptance that transcends social and cutural expectations are common.

  • Safe Exploration of Taboo/Kink

Monsters also allow readers to explore taboo or unconventional relationships in a safe, fictional space. This can include power imbalances, forbidden love, or cultural clashes. It's also a way to safely fantasize about kinks that maybe impossible with human partners or at least impractical to practice in everyday life.

Final Thoughts on Monster Romances

Monster romances captivate readers because they offer a fresh perspective on love stories. They explore acceptance, identity, and emotional complexity through characters who are both fantastical and deeply human, while also priortizing the female gaze and pleasure. These tales invite readers to embrace all appearances and differences and to celebrate love in all its forms.

For readers seeking romance with a monstrous twist and endless creativity, monster romances provide rich, imaginative worlds where love conquers fear and embraces difference. Whether you are new to the genre or a longtime fan, pick up a story and fall in love with a monster today!
